Despite tough economic times people still spending money at Chinook Centre Although Calgary is facing a downturn in the economy, it seems people continue to spend their money at the malls.Retail Insider has come out with their top 25 most productive shopping centres in Canada and Chinook Centre came in 6th.Paige O’Neill General Manager for Chinook tells 660 NEWS, what’s attracting the customers:“A lot of other complimentary retailers, the opening of Kate Spade, and just the success of some of our other lux and mid-market retailers…I think it’s gives us a bit of an advantage when you think about shopping and destination shopping. Also we have the seven full service restaurants, theaters and a bowling alley so it’s kind of everything in one stop.”O’Neill says despite tough times people are still walking through the doors. “Through December and January our traffic’s been relatively even in the last year, down a little bit I think coming up, but for the most part people are still coming to the mall and still spending…they might be a little more cautious on their expenditures given the state of the economy in Alberta but so far the majority of our retailers are faring it fairly well.”She adds, ‘With the success of U.S. retailers in Canada, international market places are looking at Calgary as a very viable place to set up their business’.
